This blog post is inspired by a good friend of mine who asked is there was any truth in that honey and cinnamon will help you lose weight. My short answer is yes, honey and cinnamon can help you lose weight, as well as help heal a variety of other ailments. However, upon doing research online most information out there forget to include a few key details on how to do it properly and safely.
Not all cinnamon
is created equal
The two most common varieties of cinnamon are cassia and ceylon. There are many others varieties out there, but today we are going to focus on these two as they are widely available. There is a very good chance that the cinnamon you have in your spice cabinet is cassia. Most spices do not label what type is in the container so if it just says “Cinnamon” you can assume it’s cassia. Cassia is the lesser expensive they ceylon as well. The only way to really know if you are getting ceylon is that it specifically says so on the label. Also, you’ll notice you’ll pay a but more for it. But let me tell you it’s WELL worth it!
Ceylon cinnamon simply tastes better and the aroma is something you’ll instantly fall in love with. I did my own taste test side-by-side and tried the ceylon first. It was pleasant, sweet and you can easily consume it. Next I tried the cassia, and compared to the ceylon it was bitter and honestly didn’t really like it. How could have I gone my whole life not knowing there was an amazing tasting cinnamon out there? Now that I know the difference I am never buy plain old ‘cinnamon’ again. Ceylon is where it’s at, baby!
Upon further research I also found out that ceylon cinnamon has more health benefits than the cassia variety and is more effective at reducing aliments. They both share certain characteristics such as antimicrobial, and in terms of inhibiting the growth of fungi and yeast, and regulating blood sugar, their contents differ much in terms of the amount of coumarin. Celyon has an extremely low amount of coumarin compared to cassia which is very high. Coumarin is moderately toxic to the liver and kidneys and European health agencies have warned against consuming high amounts of cassia bark because of its high coumarin content. but don’t worry if you’ve been consuming cassia cinnamon most of us don’t consume it in large enough quantities to do harm. However, this bring be to my next point.
How to use cinnamon for weight loss
If you plan on doing a cleanse involving cinnamon it is important that you use the proper type on cinnamon so you’ll have more benefits. As I mentioned before, many websites offer a solution but fail to mention any of the harm that can happen by ingesting too much of the cassia cinnamon. Of course the amount of harm is different for everyone. One teaspoon per day of cassia may be above what smaller people can tolerate. If you are doing a cinnamon cleanse for weight loss, chances are you are not a ‘smaller’ person. Please invest in the ceylon variety, not only for your health but for its superior taste as well.
Adding cinnamon to your daily diet is easy. You can sprinkle a bit in your steel cut oatmeal, sprouted grain toast, on a piece of fruit, in yogurt or even in your tea, coffee or smoothie. You can even add it to your dessert (Shhh, I didn’t say that!)
To lose weight start with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of ceylon cinnamon per day. We want to make sure that you don’t have a sensitivity to cinnamon. If you do have a cinnamon allergy it may only be from the cassia variety and not the ceylon. Once you know you can tolerate cinnamon well, you can increase you dosage slowly up to 2 teaspoons per day, or perhaps even more.
Honey and Cinnamon
Another way to use cinnamon is to make a cleansing drink with honey. Again, not all honey is created equal. I personally only use raw as it offers more benefits over regular honey. Heat water to almost boiling, mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon into the water and let cool enough to drink. Then add in a teaspoon of raw honey. Letting the water cool helps preserve the benefits of the raw honey. Drinking a glass per day my help you lose weight as well as relieve other symptoms.
